The Bird Is The Word: Help Us Adopt A Flamingo

Listen to SunKiss and help make the world a better place.

At SunKiss, we pledge not just to be a supercool radio station, but also to make a difference to the world around us. It's just part of who we are!

So, our first challenge is to adopt a flamingo - such a beautiful bird with lots of character. It has a distinguished elegance about it that matches the French Riviera, and a certain quirkiness that fits well with the SunKiss vibe. In fact, there's a whole flamboyance of flamingos (yes, that really is what you call a group of flamingos) very close to our studios in the French Carmargue.

The Camargue Regional Nature Park is a unique ecosystem and a Mediterranean biodiversity hot spot, hosting a wide variety of bird and plant species, as well as reptiles, butterflies and crustaceans. By taking part in our challenge, you’ll not only be helping these iconic birds, but also the wetlands necessary for their survival.

So how can you help us adopt our very first SunKiss mascot. It's very simple - just tweet us @sunkisslife anytime you hear a type of bird in the song title or artist name - You can also message us at hello@sunkiss.radio. You play - we pay. It’s as simple as that.

All you have to do is listen out for the birds. They could be hidden in the song title or the artist's name. As long as you refer to the track we are playing, your message will count and it will make a difference.

Our challenge to you is to find all 15 bird species on our playlist this summer. Yes, there's even a song about a flamingo on there somewhere. Of course, feel free to collaborate with the whole SunKiss community as together we are all stronger. We hope it will be a lot of fun and we can't wait to introduce you to our adopted mascot, a Greater Flamingo from the Camargue.

So how can you make a difference? Well, our sponsors, Riviera Organisation, have agreed to make a donation for every message we receive naming a bird song on our playlist. Yes, every tweet or e-mail will directly result in more support for the charity. How cool is that? What's more, once all 15 bird species are discovered, our sponsors have agreed to cover the adoption fees for life in the name of the SunKiss community. We're really excited by this generous offer, so we're counting on you to, er, make it count!

Our adoption is part of an ongoing support programme for the research and ringing programme at the Tour du Valat, and we will be following our our mascot closely - keeping you up to date with its latest adventures. Get together with the SunKiss community online and on our social media channels and listen out for the birds. Together we can make a difference!

Spoiler alert ... This is not a cheat sheet, but we thought you might like to know a few fun facts about flamingos.

  • The word ‘flamingo’ comes from the Latin and Spanish for ‘fire’ referring of course to their bright pink feathers.

  • Flamingos can grow up to 1m87cm - that's taller than most humans

  • They stand on one leg to preserve body temperature, although we're not sure how that helps

  • The backward bending knee of a flamingo isn’t a knee at all, it’s actually its ankle. Its knee is much higher and hidden underneath its feathers

  • When she walks by, she brightens up the neighbourhood (that's a clue by the way)

  • With a lifespan of 30-40 years in the wild, flamingos are longevity champions. Some of the oldest known wild flamingos frequently hang out in the Camargue at the Salins d'Aigues Mortes.

Happy birdwatching - we mean, bird-listening
